The problem
Lifstyl bills its agents through BrokerSumo. When a payment declined, someone had to notice, chase the agent and keep track of who had been told. That is easy to miss and awkward to do by hand.
What Apex built
- A watcher on the BrokerSumo payments API that catches declined payments as they happen
- Event-driven Cloud Functions that notify the agent, then escalate to the broker through three tiers
- Idempotent state in Firestore, so no one is notified twice for the same decline
- Error monitoring in Sentry, so a failure in the automation is seen before it costs a payment
